Katie Brennan, from Ms.Boyle’s First Class had a fantastic weekend competing in the ‘Flogas Irish Junior Open tour’ in the u7’s category in Spa Golf Club, Co Down on Sunday 15th May.
The tour is for boys and girls from the ages of 5 -18 and in all Junior Irish open events the boys and girls compete against eachother. It is Ireland’s biggest event for aspiring junior golf players.
It is endorsed by famous Irish golfers such as Shane Lowry, Padraig Harrington and Ryder cup captain Paul McGinley. Katie competed against boys and girls from around the country and managed to win the under 7 champion title!
Katie started playing golf when she was 4 but this was the first time that she played in a competition. After a few mistakes on the first 3 holes, due to Katie being nervous, she held her composure for the final 6 holes which is what made the difference for her to win the tournament!
After such an amazing performance we wanted to find out more! We sat down with Katie to find out more!
1. How did you get into golf?
My dad bought me toy golf clubs when I was 3, when I turned 4 my grandad bought me a 7 iron and a putter which I practiced with on my holidays in Donegal. When I was 6, Santa brought me my first bag of clubs.
2. Do you think golf is a good sport for girls?
Yes, because you can use your camogie skills and gymnastics skills to be good at golf. It’s also lots of fun !
3. Who is your golfing hero and why?
Shane Lowry because he’s really good at putting.
4. Have you any hopes/dreams for golf in the future?
I really want to get a hole in one!
5. Any advice for girls who want to play golf?
You have to practice lots.
Well done Katie on your great win, we are all so proud of you! ⛳️ ⭐️
