Sport has always played a pivotal role in the holistic development of all children in St. Paul’s. With an emphasis on physical literacy and the development of fundamental movement skills in PE through all class levels, students have a wonderful introduction to skills such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, kicking, striking and balancing. As a result, we believe that students will develop the confidence and motivation to engage in physical activities for life.
While there is a strong emphasis on the promotion of, and participation in, Gaelic Games within the school, children have the opportunity to sample a huge variety of sports during their time with us, including athletics, basketball, soccer, tennis, badminton, uni-hoc, Olympic handball and tag rugby,
GAA
We are represented by boys and girls teams in Gaelic football, hurling / camogie and rounders. We hope to add handball to this list with the opening of our new facilities. We are very fortunate to have a fantastic relationship with our two main local GAA clubs, Simonstown Gaels and Navan O’Mahony’s. We receive fantastic weekly coaching support from Barry Teather (Simonstown Gaels) and Noreen Sheridan (Navan O’Mahony’s), who provide innovative and fun games based activities for children in all class levels in an inclusive and supportive environment.
Many of our boys and girls teams in various codes have contested Cumann na mBunscoil finals in recent years, many of which were at Div 1 level.
Athletics
St Paul’s has a strong tradition in all aspects of athletics. Boys and girls participate in events such as long distance running, sprinting, long and triple jump, shot putt and javelin, hurdling, vertical jump and speed bounce. Students from our school have been successful up to and including All Ireland schools level. Many of our students are members of Navan AC, with whom we have a close relationship with and receive valuable coaching assistance from.
Basketball
This has become a hugely popular sport in the school. Our 4 new basketball courts and indoor basketball facilities are sure to be widely used in the coming years. Large numbers of boys and girls have participated in local school leagues. Teams have been very successful over the years and many past students continue to play basketball at secondary school and club level.
Soccer
Soccer is a very popular lunch time sport within the school. Boys and girls teams also participate in the fantastic annual 5 a-side schools competition held at the MDL grounds. Many pupils play for local teams such as OMP, Navan Town Cosmos, Parkvilla and Torro.
Students from St Paul’s also have the opportunity to get a taste for sports such as tennis and tag rugby. We receive invaluable coaching assistance from Navan and Stackallen Tennis Clubs and Navan Rugby Club.
